Wolf propels Patriots to twinbill split at UNCP

PEMBROKE, NC – Senior Michaela Wolf drove in a pair of runs and recorded her second career save as Francis Marion University claimed a game-two 4-3 win over UNC Pembroke on Saturday (April 10) and split of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with the Braves.  UNCP won the opener 2-1 as FMU stranded runners on second and third as the game ended.

Francis Marion improves to 29-12 overall and 13-7 in conference, while UNCP moves to 28-16 and 10-10.

Wolf (16-6) took the loss in game one as she allowed only two runs (one earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts.

Alex Hartshorn (13-5) earned the game-one win as she pitched four shutout innings before giving way to Caroline Newman in the fifth inning. Newman picked up her third save.

UNCP took a 1-0 lead in the opener when Randi Pruitt singled up the middle to score Holly Berry in the second inning. The Braves added their second run in the bottom of the fourth when Carissa Dancer scored on a passed ball.

Wolf hit an RBI-single in the top of the seventh to cut the Braves' lead in half at 2-1, but the Jessica Hogan grounded out with two runners on to end the contest.

FMU outhit UNCP 9-8, but stranded 10 runners on base.  Wolf was 3-for-3 in the opener.

Junior righty Cea Knox improved to 13-5 on the season with the win in game two as she allowed three runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings. Wolf recorded the final four outs to earn her first save of 2010.  She is tied for second on the PBC's all-time wins list with 86.

Wolf was 1-for-3 in the second contest with two runs driven in.  Senior third baseman Kat Beauvais was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while senior left fielder Jessica Birchmeier was 2-for-4 with an RBI and sophomore center fielder Destinea Schneider was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Jamie Burwell (5-2) was credited with the game-two loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits in two innings of work.

Game two saw Jelena Shaw homer in her first at bat to put UNCP up 1-0. Shaw now has 31 home runs for her career, a Pembroke school record.

FMU would take the lead in the top of the third with three runs.  Chelle Phillips registered an RBI single to left and Wolf drilled a two-run single. The Patriots added a fourth run in the top of the fifth when Birchmeier plated Ashley Jaramillo with an RBI single through the right side.

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Braves rallied for two runs, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Lynn Grantham and a Morgan Patrick walk with the bases loaded. However, Wolf relieved Knox and induced an inning-ending ground out.

Schneider threw out the potential tying run at the plate with one out in the bottom of the seventh to help preserve the victory.

FMU will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday when the Patriots play host to Queens University of Charlotte for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
