Patriots bid adieu to seniors, lose 3-1 to Jaguars

FLORENCE, SC – Despite a fast start and productive performances from its three seniors on Senior Day, Francis Marion University dropped a four-set decision (22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18) to GRU Augusta, Saturday afternoon (Nov. 1) in Peach Belt Conference women's volleyball action.

FMU (9-17, 5-11) will conclude its regular-season schedule with a pair of PBC road matches next weekend: Friday night at the University of Montevallo and Saturday afternoon at Columbus State University.

The Peach Belt Tournament will begin on Nov. 11.

Patriot sophomore middle blocker Caroline Boone continued her recent strong play as she registered 17 kills, a .314 hitting percentage, and four blocks.  Junior Alexzandra Reed added 11 kills.

Senior setter Sloane Shank dished out 35 assists and had 10 digs to post her sixth double-double of the year.  Senior defensive specialist Brianna West dug up a career-high 14 balls, while senior hitter Shelby Jones tallied five kills, five blocks, and three service aces.

Junior libero Jessica Amador led FMU with 20 digs, while junior middle blocker Shelby Schindler had a season-high seven blocks.

Kristen Koch's 15 kills paced three GRU Augusta (23-7, 12-5) players with double-figure kills.  Setter Alyssa Latham recorded 49 assists and 11 digs.  Maggie Darling added 10 kills and 22 digs.

Francis Marion hit .324 as a team in the opening set and never trailed en route to the 25-22 victory.  Shank and Jones combined on the final point with Jones pounding out the kill.  The second set was knotted at 22-22 when the Jaguars scored three of the set's final four points to even the match at one set apiece.

GRU Augusta scored the opening four points of the third set and never trailed, leading by as many as nine points.  In the fourth set FMU battled gallantly, pulling to within 16-14, but GRU Augusta answered with a decisive 5-1 spurt.
