Patriot Women drop 2020 debut at CSU

COLUMBUS, GA – Junior forward Kiana Adderton's double-double of 19 points and nine rebounds was not enough as Francis Marion University suffered a 74-51 loss to Columbus State University in the team's 2020 debut, Saturday (Jan. 4) afternoon in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

Francis Marion drops to 5-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play. FMU will travel to USC Aiken on Wednesday (Jan. 8) for a 5:30 tip-off. The Patriots will return to the Smith University Center on Saturday, Jan. 11, when they host Lander University in conference play at 1:30 p.m.

Adderton connected on 9-of-12 shots en route to her team-high scoring output.  Sophomore center Zaria Woods, who entered the game leading all NCAA players (all divisions) in field goal percentage at 72.8 percent, added 11 points and eight rebounds. Freshman guard Scarlett Gilmore registered six points off the bench. The Patriots shot 35.6 percent from the field and made 6-of-13 free throws.

Columbus State (7-2, 2-1), was led by LeeAysia Williamson with 20 points, while Eboni Williams recorded 16 points and four steals and Kaihla Carter had 12 points, 12 rebounds, and four steals. The Cougars shot 38.2 percent from the field and made 8 of 13 free throws.

Francis Marion scored the game's first six points, but the Cougars responded with an 11-0 run and led 24-13 at the end of the first period.  A three-pointer by senior guard Abigail Bullock trimmed the deficit to 24-16, but despite holding CSU scoreless for 3:17 that was as close as FMU would get.  The Cougars led by as many as 16 points in the period before settling for a 38-30 advantage at halftime as Adderton hit a jump shot with 11 ticks left.

CSU recorded the first eight points of the third quarter to again lead by 16 points.  A three-pointer by Gilmore got Francis Marion to within 13 at 48-35 with 3:51 on the clock, but the Patriots would not get any closer.
