Late Misses end Patriot rally as FMU falls to Tampa 72-67

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Francis Marion University junior forward Kainan Pouncy tallied season highs of 28 points and 10 rebounds, but the Patriots came up empty on a possession in the final seconds allowing the University of Tampa to secure a 72-67 victory, Saturday night (Nov. 30) on the final day of the Eckerd College Thanksgiving Men's Basketball Classic.

FMU (1-4) will now take a break for exams before returning to action on Dec. 17 with a noon tip-off at the University of Mount Olive.  The next home contest for the Patriots will be their Peach Belt Conference opener against the University of North Georgia on Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Trailing 70-67 in the final minute, Francis Marion had three shots and another possession that ended in a foul thus allowing Tampa to escape with the win.

Pouncy connected on 9-of-17 field goal attempts, including 3-of-6 three-point attempts, and was 7-of-8 at the charity stripe.  Sophomore swingman Alex Cox scored a career-high-equaling 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc, while junior forward Kendall Wall added 10 points and eight rebounds and sophomore center Winston Hill 10 points and seven rebounds.

Pat Bacon paced Tampa (2-5) with 24 points, while both Martin Lakovic (13 points, 12 rebounds) and Derrick Felder (13 points, 10 rebounds) posted double-doubles.

Francis Marion took an early 6-0 lead, but the Spartans answered with eight straight points.  FMU took its last lead at 11-10 following a Pouncy jumper at the 15:53 mark.  Tampa then put together a 19-2 run as the Patriots missed 12 of their next 13 shots.

However, FMU rebounded with its own 14-1 spurt to trim the deficit to 30-27 after a three-pointer by Cox with 1:59 left in the first half.  Tampa held a 37-31 advantage at intermission after shooting 61.5 percent from the floor over the opening 20 minutes.

The Spartans scored the opening six points of the second stanza to go up 43-31, and would later lead 50-33.  A lay-in by Hill got the margin back under double figures at 52-43 with 12:23 left, but Tampa pushed the lead to 61-49 with 7:15 on the clock.

Wall capped another FMU rally with a lay-up that brought the Patriots within 66-63 at the 3:43 mark.  The Spartans countered with four straight points, but Hill scored four consecutive to leave the margin at 70-67 entering the final minute.

Francis Marion connected on 35.4 percent of its shots, including 9-of-28 attempts from behind the three-point arc, and was 12-of-17 at the foul line.  Tampa shot 53.8 percent from the field, including 5-of-14 on three-point attempts, and hit 11-of-16 free throw attempts.

FMU did force 15 turnovers and held a 24-9 edge in points-off-turnovers.
