WINGATE, NC – Senior Devin Nelson and sophomore Alison Filer led the Francis Marion University men and women to 20th and 21st-place finishes respectively at the 2017 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Cross Country Championship Meet, Saturday morning (Nov. 4) on the campus of Wingate University.
In his final race as a Patriot, Nelson finished the 10,000-meter course in 35:28.04 to place 84th. Fellow FMU senior Javier Bustos Jaimes placed 99th with a time of 36:04.78, while other Patriot runners included senior Jonathan Reid (36:56.38) in 116th, junior Carlos Oliver (39:54.28) in 138th, and junior Robert Hahn (42:04.21) in 146th.
The University of Mount Olive edged Queens University of Charlotte 50-55 to claim the men's team title.
Filer registered a personal-best time for 6,000-meters as she finished in 24:47.54 to place in 59th position. Murrells Inlet native and senior MacKenzie Arnold, who was also running her final race in the red, white, and blue, also posted a personal-best time of 25:42.08 to finish 87th. Other FMU runners included sophomore Emma Driggers (27:44.50) in 127th, sophomore Alexis Byers (28:16.71) in 135th, senior Taylor Brunson (31:04.80) in 147th, and sophomore Jasmine Watson (39:20.24) in 159th.
Queens won the women's team championship with a 76-94 edge over second-place Anderson University.
