Conference-leading UNG holds off Patriot Women

FLORENCE, SC – Conference-leading University of North Georgia held off several Francis Marion University rallies in the final quarter to capture a hard-fought 63-53 win over the Patriots, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 10) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

Francis Marion drops to 13-9 overall and 10-7 in the conference, while the Nighthawks move to 20-3 and 15-2. The Patriots will be at home on Monday evening to host Young Harris College with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.

Junior forward Shaunice Fulmore led FMU with 19 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard Khai Chandler scored 12, senior guard Keanua Williams 11, and sophomore guard Abigail Bullock 10.  Chandler pushed her career point total to 1,400 and moved past former Patriot Gwen Canty and into 13th position on the program's career scoring list.  Fulmore is now tied for 17th place with Cassandra Bishop at 1,254 points.

FMU senior forward Kristin Tines hauled down a game-high 18 rebounds, only one shy of her career high.

Freshman guard Abbie Franklin led North Georgia with 15 points, while 6-4 senior forward Mackenzie Darrah tallied 14 points and nine rebounds.

Despite missing its opening eight shots, FMU overcame the cold start and led 7-6 after a three-pointer by Williams.  The two squads were deadlocked 10-10 at the end of the first quarter.

FMU grabbed a 14-10 advantage following a fast-break, spinning lay-up by Fulmore early in the second period.  A lay-in by Williams gave the Patriots a 23-22 lead with 2:52 remaining before halftime.  North Georgia then closed the half with an 8-2 run to take a 30-25 lead into the locker room.

The deficit would swell to 10 at 41-31, and the Patriots trailed 45-36 heading into the final quarter.

Three times in the final period, Francis Marion would trim the lead to five, the final time at 52-47 when Bullock scored on a jumper in the paint with 2:52 remaining.  Another bucket by Bullock pulled FMU to within 56-50 at the 1:32 mark, but North Georgia scored the next four points to seal the win.

Francis Marion connected on 27.4 percent of its field goal attempts and was 8-of-14 at the foul line, while North Georgia shot 44.1 percent and hit only 10-of-20 shots at the free throw line.

FMU held an 11-4 edge in bench scoring and a slight 12-10 margin in second-chance points.
