Fast Start carries Nighthawks past Patriot women

DAHLONEGA, GA – The University of North Georgia connected on its first 12 field goal attempts as the Nighthawks spoiled Francis Marion University's hopes of a PBC-opening win, taking an 82-54 victory, Saturday (Dec. 2) afternoon in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.

The Patriots fall to .500 overall (3-3) and 0-1 in PBC play, while UNG improves to 5-1 and 1-0. FMU now breaks for final exams.  Francis Marion will be back in action on Dec. 17 as the women's squad welcomes Georgia Southwestern State University to the Smith University Center with tip-off set for 1:30 p.m.

Senior Khai Chandler tallied 20 points for Francis Marion, while junior Shaunice Fulmore recorded 14. Senior Briana Burgins brought down a game-tying high seven rebounds in the game, while scoring 12 points and moving to within seven points of 1000 for her career. Fulmore is only 24 points shy of 1000.

UNG's Mackenzie Darrah led all scorers with 21 points, while Deana Blankenship followed with 19 points, connecting on 9-of-10 field goals.

After an 8-8 tie at the 6:24 mark of the first stanza, the Nighthawks went on a 21-3 spurt to take a commanding 29-11 lead at the end of the quarter. North Georgia did not miss a shot (12 of 12) in the opening period.

UNG kept the foot on the pedal as they would have a 20-point advantage (46-26) at the intermission, shooting an impressive 62.1 percent from the field. Darrah recorded 16 points in the opening half for the Nighthawks, while Chandler tallied 12 points for FMU.

Fulmore picked her game up in the second half, scoring 12 points, but the Nighthawks would maintain a double-digit lead throughout the rest of the game.

UNG finished shooting 56.1 percent compared to Francis Marion's 30.6 percent. The Nighthawks outrebounded the Patriots 36-29. FMU went 7-of-10 from the free-throw line, while North Georgia was 13-of-20.
