#14 Bulldogs hold off Patriots in battle of unbeatens

FLORENCE, SC – Fourteenth-ranked Wingate University erased a three-point deficit with a game-ending 13-6 run to claim a hard-fought 69-65 victory over previously unbeaten Francis Marion University, Wednesday evening (Nov. 15) in non-conference women's basketball action.

Francis Marion (2-1) will play at Elizabeth City State University on Saturday at 2 p.m. The next home game for the Patriots will be Dec. 17 against Georgia Southwestern State University at 1:30 p.m.

Senior Khai Chandler led FMU with 23 points, her third-straight 20-point outing to start the season.  Junior forward Shaunice Fulmore tallied 19 points and seven rebounds, while senior forward Briana Burgins registered her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.  Senior guard Keanua Williams chipped in 10 points and five assists.

Burgins recorded three steals to push her career total to 160 and move past Traci Matthews into 23rd position on FMU's career list.

Senior 6-4 center Marta Miscenko paced Wingate (3-0) with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while junior guard Courtney Robinson added 15 points and a game-high eight assists.  Junior guard Caroline Averette also posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Bulldogs scored the game's first seven points and led by as many as eight in the opening period before settling for a 20-14 at the end of the quarter.  In the second period, again Wingate opened an eight-point margin and held a 39-34 advantage at intermission.  The Bulldogs made four of their first five three-point attempts after missing 12-of-13 in the opening two games of the season.

An 8-2 spurt to open the second half gave Francis Marion its first lead at 42-41 following a three-point play by Chandler at the 6:38 mark.  The teams then traded the lead for the remainder of the period before a three-point bucket by Chandler gave FMU a 55-54 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

A jumper in the lane by Chandler put the Patriots up 59-56 with 5:19 remaining.  Eight straight points by the Bulldogs, including six by Miscenko, gave Wingate the lead for good.  Wingate sealed the win by sinking three of four free throws in the final 17 seconds.

Francis Marion shot 35.1 percent from the floor and missed only one of 11 free throws, while Wingate connected on 47.5 percent of its field goal attempts, finished 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, and hit 8-of-11 free throws.

The Patriots forced 17 Wingate turnovers, while committing only nine themselves, but held only a 16-12 advantage in points-off-turnovers.
