A pair of early-season unbeaten squads will face off on Wednesday (Nov. 15) when Francis Marion University plays host to 14th-ranked Wingate University in non-conference women's basketball action.
Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in the Smith University Center.
General admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students (FMU students are admitted free with ID). The game will be streamed live online, at https://www.youtube.com/user/FMUPatriots , courtesy of the Patriot Sports Network.
Francis Marion picked up two wins last weekend in the PBC/Conference Carolinas Challenge, while the Bulldogs went 2-0 in the PBC/SAC Challenge that they hosted.
Francis Marion is led by senior 5-10 guard Khai Chandler, the reigning PBC Player of the Week, with a 23.5 points per game average. Junior 5-10 forward Shaunice Fulmore is averaging 19.5 ppg and 9.5 rebounds per game, while senior 5-8 forward Briana Burgins adds 15.5 ppg and 11.0 rpg.
Senior 6-4 center Marta Miscenko leads Wingate with a 21.0 ppg average, while junior 5-9 forward Danasia Witherspoon contributes 16.5 ppg and 11.5 rpg. Miscenko has connected on 15-of-20 field goal attempts this season.
FMU is averaging 72.5 ppg and surrendering 50 ppg, while the Bulldogs are scoring 64 ppg and allowing 53 ppg.
Wingate leads the all-time series 8-6, but five of the Patriot losses have been by three points or less. This will be the first meeting between the two in seven seasons. FMU owns a 5-3 edge in Florence.
The series also features a pair of post-season meetings. The Patriots defeated the Bulldogs 89-71 in the national quarterfinals of the 1986 NAIA Tournament in Kansas City, Mo., and Francis Marion captured an 85-72 victory in the 1999 NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional played in Florence.
The two programs were named the most successful NCAA women's basketball programs in their respective states by the Next College Student Athlete (NCSA) organization. FMU also ranks 11th in all-time victories (855) among NCAA Division II members, while Wingate is 14th with 776 wins.
