Chandler surpasses milestone in Patriots’ season-opening win

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University senior Khai Chandler scored a game-high 23 points and became the first Patriot in seven years to surpass the 1,000-career point mark as FMU cruised to a 65-35 win over Erskine College, Friday evening (Nov. 10) in the first game of the PBC/Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Challenge.

Francis Marion starts the season with a 1-0 record as Erskine falls to 0-1. The Patriots will take on the Crusaders of North Greenville University on the second day of the challenge, Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Smith University Center.

Chandler became the 27th FMU women's basketball player to reach the milestone and now has 1,001.  She also grabbed seven rebounds and hit five three-point field goals. Fellow senior Briana Burgins followed Chandler with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and three steals, while junior Shaunice Fulmore added 10 points and 12 rebounds.  Burgins passed former FMU start Leatha Lee for 17th position on the Patriot career rebounding list with 643.

Christian Brown led the Flying Fleet with 12 points, while shooting 50 percent (6-of-12) from the field.

The Patriots led in points off turnovers (24-11), points in the paint (22-20), second chance points (18-4), and fast-break points (14-4).

There were only two ties in the contest, both coming early in the first quarter, before Francis Marion would take the lead for the rest of the game.  FMU snapped a 7-7 deadlock by outscoring the Flying Fleet 14-2 over a three-minute span late in the first quarter.  The Patriots held Erskine to only two points in the second quarter and held a 31-11 advantage at halftime.

The Patriots led by as many as 39 in the third period, at 55-16.
