FMU’s Welty named to Google Cloud Academic All-District softball squad

Francis Marion University junior catcher Chelsea Welty has been named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Softball Team for District 3 of NCAA Division II as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The Google Cloud Academic All-District® teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.  The Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2017-18 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program.

Welty is a biology and psychology double major with a 3.763 GPA and is part of the FMU Honors Program.  A native of St. Helena, S.C., she hit .346 in 23 games before suffering a season-ending injury.  She registered four doubles, five homers, and 20 runs batted in, while posting nine multi-hit games and five multi-RBI games.  With her working behind the plate, only 13 opposing baserunners attempted to steal, and Welty threw out four of those.  She committed only two errors in 132 chances for a .985 fielding percentage.  She also opened the 2018 season with a 14-game hitting streak.

A three-year starter, she owns a .310 career batting average with 17 homers and 87 RBIs, and has thrown out 25 of 92 runners attempting to steal.

She is a two-time NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete, has served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for two years, and is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma national college athlete honor society.  She has been named to the Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll and the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll on every opportunity and picked up a D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award in 2017.  She was recently named to the PBC Softball All-Academic Team for the second time.

Francis Marion finished its 2018 season with a 19-25 record.

Welty, a product of Beaufort High School, advances to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, with first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees to be selected in June.
