Patriot softball earns road split with USCA

FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore designated hitter Shania Domingue keyed a 15-hit attack and Francis Marion University scored the final four runs in a 10-64 win over USC Aiken on Saturday (April 14) earning a split of their Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader. In the game one, USCA catcher Sydney Kate Murphy homered twice and drove in three runs, while Hannah Price (5-10) tossed a four-hitter as the Pacers prevailed 9-3.

Francis Marion (19-23, 5-13) will conclude it regular-season schedule with a PBC twinbill at Columbus State University on Saturday (April 21) at 1 p.m.  The Patriots' scheduled home doubleheader with Tusculum College on Sunday has been canceled due to the threat of rain.

Domingue went 3-for-4 in game two with a double and two runs batted in.  Five Patriots recorded two hits apiece: junior shortstop Taylor Johnson, junior catcher Jaimie Harney, senior third baseman Sam Chiudina, and freshmen outfielders Taylor DeLeon and Karson Parker.

Chiudina drove in three runs with a two-run homer and an RBI-single.  She now trails junior first baseman Jessica Harney for the team RBI lead by only one 53-52 with both having surpassed the previous FMU season record of 51.

In the second game, the first six FMU batters reached base by way of a hit as the Patriots scored four times.  Jaimie Harney registered an RBI-single to center, twin sister Jessica Harney then doubled her home, and Chiudina followed with her two-run homer.  Francis Marion went on to later load the bases with two outs, but could do no more damage.

USCA (12-32, 4-12) quickly answered by batting around in the bottom of the first and also scoring four runs off FMU senior right-hander Samantha Wroblewski.

A pair of RBI fielder choice grounders by Parker and Johnson in the top of the third inning put Francis Marion on top 6-4.  However, USCA scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to knot the score at 6-6.

A two-out run-scoring single to center by Chiudina regained the lead for FMU in the top of the sixth inning.  Domingue added a two-run double down the left field line to up the margin to 9-6.  An RBI-single to left by Jaimie Harney in the top of the seventh provided an insurance run.

Sophomore righty Sydney Holland (12-14) entered the game in relief of Wroblewski and pitched the final six frames to earn the win.  She allowed only two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks. She retired seven of the last eight batters after USCA had tied the contest.

Pacer reliever Carolina Cockrell (3-10) took the loss as she surrendered the final seven FMU tallies.  Price, the game-one winner, also started game two, but did not get out of the first inning.  However at the plate, Price went 3-for-4, while first baseman Chandler Terrapin was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in.

In Saturday's opener, USCA took a 2-0 lead in the second, but Francis Marion trimmed the margin in half with a single tally in the top of the third.  Freshman outfielder Madison Hatfield led off with a walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a line out to center field, and scampered home on an RBI-single through the right side by Jaimie Harney.

The Pacers scored four times in the fourth, including a three-run homer by Terrapin, to assume a 6-1 edge.

Again FMU rallied, this time with two runs in the top of the fifth on a two-out, two-run single to center by Chiudina.

However, USCA answered quickly with a single run in the home-half of the fifth and then Murphy hit a two-run homer in the sixth for insurance runs.

Holland started the opener and pitched the first two innings and was tagged with the loss.  Freshman right-hander Reece Davis pitched the final four frames for the Patriots.

DeLeon and Jaimie Harney both have six-game hitting streaks, while Johnson has reached base safely in each of the past 16 contests.
