Francis Marion University sophomore right-hander Sydney Holland has been named the Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 2-8.
Holland picked up a win and a save in a sweep of Georgia Southwestern State University in FMU's only action last week. The Statesville, N.C., native started the first game and pitched all five innings of the 8-0 win, surrendering only one hit and one walk with four strikeouts. She entered game two in the fifth inning and closed out the 9-1 win by setting down all six Hurricanes she faced, including one strikeout.
Holland leads the PBC in appearances (32) and starts (21) and is tied for sixth in wins (11). She is also tied for the league lead in complete games (15) and leads outright in saves (3).
For the season, she has fanned 143 batters in 153.2 innings and tossed six shutouts.
Holland and the Patriots (18-20, 4-10) will play host to Georgia College (27-11, 8-2) in a key Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Wednesday (April 11) at 2 p.m. at the FMU Softball Stadium in the Griffin Athletic Complex.
Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students with FMU students admitted free with identification.
In facing the second-place Bobcats on Wednesday, Holland and the Patriot pitching staff will be matched against the top batting offense in the conference (team average of .357) that includes four of the top seven hitters in the PBC – all above .402. Francis Marion ranks second in team batting with a .323 average.
Francis Marion leads the all-time series with Georgia College 33-30.
Holland is a product of West Iredell High School.
