Patriots blow out Hurricanes 8-0 and 9-1

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University right-handed pitchers Sydney Holland and Samantha Wroblewski limited Georgia Southwestern State University to one unearned run on five hits and Sam Chiudina and Jessica Harney combined for 10 hits and nine runs batted in as the Patriots swept the Hurricanes 8-0 and 9-1, Sunday afternoon (April 8) in Peach Belt Conference softball action.

Both Chiudina and Wroblewski were honored prior to Sunday's first game in Senior Day festivities. Francis Marion improves to 18-20 overall and 4-10 in conference action, while Georgia Southwestern drops to 18-25 and 7-7.

FMU will host a PBC doubleheader against Georgia College on Wednesday at 2 p.m.  That twinbill is a make-up from an earlier rainout this season.

In Sunday's opener, Holland (11-12) allowed only one hit, a double in the fourth, while striking out four and walking only one.

The Patriots scored three times in the first, twice in the second, and three times in the third as the game ended after five innings. The first time through the FMU line-up, five players recorded hits against GSW starter Madason Messer (8-5).

Harney went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Chiudina rapped out two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Junior shortstop Taylor Johnson had a 2-run double.

In the second contest, the Hurricanes took a 1-0 advantage in the top of third when first baseman Lauren Kuerzi was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. A muffed throw earlier in the inning led the tally.

Francis Marion then rallied with three runs in each of the third, fifth, and sixth frames.  Chiudina enjoyed a 3-for-4 contest with a school-record tying three doubles and two RBIs, while the top three batters in the Patriot line-up had two hits apiece: Johnson, junior catcher Jaimie Harney, and Jessica HarneyJessica Harney had a double and three RBIs. The last time a Patriot registered three doubles in a game was during the 2010 season.

Wroblewski (1-1) pitched the first four innings to earn the win.  While making her 100th career pitching appearance, she surrendered only four hits and fanned one.  Holland pitched two scoreless innings to close the game and earned her third save of 2018.

Righty Ansley Dean (3-6) allowed the first five FMU runs and was tagged with the loss. Hurricane left fielder Mikela Barlow had two hits and scored a run in the second contest.
