Offense impresses in sweep over Barton on Thursday

WILSON, NC – Francis Marion University scored 21 total runs to sweep a twinbill, 9-0 and 12-10 in 10 innings, against Barton College, Thursday afternoon (Mar. 8) in non-conference collegiate softball action.

Francis Marion improves to .500 (11-11) for the campaign, while Barton falls to 7-13.

The Patriots will be back in action with a pair of doubleheaders this weekend as they host PBC-members Augusta University on Saturday and Georgia College on Sunday with both doubleheaders starting at 1 p.m.

Junior first baseman Jessica Harney homered in both contests, while sophomore designated player Shania Domingue had three total hits on the day and five runs batted in. Junior shortstop Taylor Johnson accounted for two base knocks and the two game-winning RBIs in the second contest for FMU, and freshman center fielder Karson Parker recorded five hits on the day.

Back-to-back RBI-singles by junior right fielder Jaimie Harney and Domingue got the scoring started for the Patriots in the first inning of the first contest, plating Johnson and senior third baseman Sam Chiudina, while putting FMU up 2-0.

An inning later, Jessica Harney blasted a homer to right center field to expand Francis Marion's lead to 5-0.

The Patriots would keep pouring on the runs in the fourth frame with an RBI-double by Chiudina plating freshman left fielder Madison Hatfield. Later that inning, Domingue doubled down the left field line, tallying three more runs for FMU and giving the Patriots a 9-0 lead.

Francis Marion's sophomore starting right-handed pitcher Sydney Holland (7-6) pitched a gem as she did not allow a run and only two hits in her five innings pitched.

Junior rightly Hannah Jones (2-5) took the loss for Barton as she pitched 3.1 innings, giving up nine runs on eight hits.

In the second game, the Bulldogs put a three-spot on the board in the third frame as junior first baseman Jessica Onega and senior second baseman Brittany Jacobs both had RBI-doubles.

The Patriots trimmed Barton's lead to two runs in the fourth inning with a run-scoring single by Domingue.  FMU would then take the lead 5-3 in the top of the fifth as Jessica Harney tied the game with a two-run homer. After Chiudina's double and junior catcher Chelsea Welty's single, Jaimie Harney tripled to left field to take the two-run lead.

The Bulldogs cut Francis Marion's lead in half in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI-single by Onega.  A lead-off single by Jones in the bottom of the seventh would allow her to eventually come around to score on a base hit by freshman left fielder Hayley Grizzle, tying the game at 5-5 and forcing extra innings.  This led to one of the longest games in Patriot history for a contest that used the international tie-breaker rule.

In the eighth, junior Chelsea Welty put Francis Marion up 6-5 with an RBI-hit. She then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and doubled the Patriot's lead by scoring on a passed ball. Johnson added an insurance run with a single that plated junior second baseman Jennie Polak.

However, Barton would come back in the bottom half to tie the game at 8-8 with RBI-hits by sophomore shortstop Taylor Martin, freshman pitcher Jordan Blake, and freshman right fielder Nohealani Burden.

After trading single runs in the ninth frame, Polak singled in a run in the 10th and Johnson tripled to right field plating two more to give the Patriots a 12-9 lead.

The Bulldogs would tally one run in the bottom of the 10th, but the Patriots would hold on for the win.

Holland picks up her second win of the day, this time in relief, striking out three batters in 7.1 innings.

Jordan Blake (1-1) was tagged with the loss for Barton.
