Chiudina carries FMU to sweep of Trojans

FLORENCE, SC – Senior third baseman Sam Chiudina collected three hits and drove in four runs, including the game0-winning RBIs in both games, as Francis Marion University swept a non-conference doubleheader from the University of Mount Olive 7-6 and 9-6, Friday (Feb. 9) in softball action.

Francis Marion (5-1) was to have played Tusculum College on Sunday, but that twinbill has been postponed until April 15.  FMU will host the Patriot Invitational Tournament Friday through Sunday (Feb. 16-18). The Patriots will open play on Friday against Queens University of Charlotte at 5 p.m.

In Friday's opener against UMO, Chiudina homered in the sixth inning to draw FMU to within one run at 6-5 and then she walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to force in the winning run.

Senior second baseman Jennie Polak and junior right fielder Jaimie Harney both collected three hits in the opener, while junior shortstop Taylor Johnson and junior catcher Chelsea Welty had two hits.

Sophomore right-hander Sydney Holland (3-0) registered the complete-game win.  She allowed only five hits and five of the six runs she allowed were unearned.  She struck out nine and walked two.

FMU took a 3-0 lead in the fourth on a 3-run triple to deep centerfield by freshman left fielder Taylor DeLeon. After the Trojans plated a run in the top of the fifth, Welty answered with a solo homer over the left field fence to put FMU up 4-1.

Mount Olive took advantage of a pair of FMU errors to score five unearned runs in the sixth, highlighted by a pinch-hit grand slam by Alyssa Pickle, to grab a 6-4 advantage. Chiudina's solo blast over the center field fence drew the Patriots to within 6-5 heading to the seventh.

Singles by Jaimie Harney and Polak put two runners on with no outs. After a pop out, Johnson doubled in the tying run.  A base on balls to DeLeon loaded the bases setting the stage for Chiudina's walk-off walk.

Mount Olive reliever Emily Chaisson (0-1) allowed the two seventh-inning tallies and was tagged with the loss.

In the second contest, Chiudina went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, including a run-scoring single in the first frame that produced a lead FMU would not relinquish. DeLeon and Welty also had two hits apiece in game two.

With four runs in the first and three more in the fourth, Francis Marion built a 7-1 advantage.  Junior first baseman Jessica Harney plated two of her three RBIs with a two-run homer in the fourth.

Mount Olive (0-2) rallied with five runs in the fifth to trim the margin to 7-6.  Right fielder Alexis Hobson capped the rally with a two-run home run to right.

FMU responded with two insurances runs in the last of the fifth.  Chiudina doubled in the first run and Jessica Harney plated the second with a sacrifice fly.

FMU freshman righty Reece Davis (2-1) was credited with the win, while Holland came on to pitch 2.1 scoreless innings of relief to gain her first career save.

Mount Olive starter Kylie Ward (0-1) was the losing pitcher.

Johnson and Welty have both hit safely in all six contests this season.
