Falcons sweep Francis Marion on softball diamond

MONTEVALLO, AL – University of Montevallo pitchers Jocelyn Rivera and Abbey Pratt combined to limit short-handed Francis Marion University to five hits in two games as the Falcons swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from the Patriots on Saturday (April 15), winning 5-1 and 7-3.

Despite the losses, Francis Marion (27-21, 9-15) secured the final berth in next weekend's PBC Tournament in Milledgeville, Ga., beginning on Friday.   FMU played Saturday without the services of senior outfielders Mikala Barnhart and Taylor Brunson who were injured in an outfield collision last Sunday.

Rivera (12-8) tossed a one-hitter in game one and Pratt (11-12) followed up with a four-hitter in the second contest.

In Saturday's opener, Falcon first baseman Lauren Van Steenwyk stroked a two-run single in the bottom of the third to give Montevallo a 2-0 lead.  FMU trimmed the margin in half in the top of the fifth.  Freshman designated player Shania Domingue was hit by a pitch with one out, and later with two outs, stole second base.  Freshman catcher Morgan Smith then lined a double to left centerfield to plate Domingue.

The Falcons (23-21, 12-11) quickly answered in their half of the fifth when Van Steenwyk clouted a three-run home run to up the Montevallo advantage to 5-1.

Rivera struck out six and did not issue a walk.  FMU freshman right-hander Sydney Holland (13-12) took the loss as she surrendered five runs (three were earned) on nine hits in five innings of work.

In game two, Francis Marion grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of third when senior outfielder Briana Barzola reached on a two-out error and junior third baseman Sam Chiudina cranked a two-run homer over the left field fence.  It was her 10th long ball of the season, one shy of the Patriot single-season record of 11 set by Heather Garrison in 2004 and matched by Ashley Burney in 2014.

The Falcons knotted the score with two runs in the fourth and took control with a five-run fifth frame.  Van Steenwyk's two-run single broke the 2-2 deadlock.

Holland accounted for Francis Marion's third run with a solo homer in the top of the seventh.

FMU junior Samantha Wroblewski (10-6) was charged with the loss as she allowed seven runs (five earned) on nine hits in 4.1 innings.  Pratt allowed only one earned run, while fanning three.

Barzola finished the second game 2-for-3.
