Johnson & Barnhart drive Patriots past Royals

FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore shortstop Taylor Johnson hit a two-run homer in game one and senior center fielder Mikala Barnhart drove in a career-high five runs in game two as Francis Marion University swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Queens University of Charlotte on Tuesday evening (March 14), winning 3-1 and 10-3.

Francis Marion improves to 21-7 with the sweep, while Queens drops to 14-13.  FMU will host Barton College for a pair of games on Thursday at 1 p.m.

Johnson's long ball backed the two-hit pitching of freshman right-hander Sydney Holland (10-5) in the opener.  Holland, ranked 11th in Division II in total strikeouts, fanned nine while walking only two.

The home run, which sailed over the right centerfield fence, staked Francis Marion to a 2-0 lead in the second inning.  Freshman designated player Shania Domingue plated an insurance run in the last of the fifth with an RBI-double to left centerfield.

Queens' second baseman Sydney Ditto accounted for the Royals' lone run with a solo homer with one out in the sixth.  Right-hander Courtney Pearson (9-8) registered a complete game in the circle for the Royals.

Domingue finished game one with a pair of hits.

Barnhart drove in her five runs with a two-run triple in the second, an RBI ground out in the fourth, and a two-run single in the fifth.  Mainly a slap hitter, Barnhart swung away and drilled a line-drive over the drawn-in outfield in right that accounted for her triple.  She was thrown out at home trying to stretch the play into an inside-the-park homer.

FMU freshman right fielder Rayni Newman went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two driven in during the second contest, while senior second baseman Taylor Brunson was 2-for-3 with a run scored.  Senior left fielder Briana Barzola drove in a pair of runs with a fifth-inning triple.

Junior righty Samantha Wroblewski (7-1) was credited with the game-two victory. She allowed two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts in four frames.  Freshman right-hander Cristi Pressley entered with a one-run lead in the fifth and tossed three scoreless innings to earn her first collegiate save.

Queens' starter Evie Scott (5-3) took the game-two loss, while driving in a pair of runs with a fourth-inning double.  Three Royals had two hits apiece in the second contest: catcher Abby Lathan, designated player Elaina Frantellizzi, and first baseman Kelly Winter.
