Wroblewski and Brunson lift FMU to split with Bobcats

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA – Junior right-handed pitcher Samantha Wroblewski tossed a three-hit shutout and senior second baseman Taylor Brunson accounted for the game's only run with a fifth-inning solo home run as Francis Marion University defeated Georgia College 1-0 and salvaged a split of Saturday afternoon's (March 11) Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader.  Georgia College scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim a 7-6 win in game one.

FMU (19-7, 4-2) was to have hosted Barton College for a twinbill on Sunday, but those games have been postponed until Thursday at 1 p.m. because of forecasted winter weather on Sunday.  The Patriots' next games will be a home doubleheader on Tuesday against Queens University of Charlotte at 4 p.m.

Brunson's homer, her first of the year, ended up in the netting beyond the left field fence.  Senior left fielder Briana Barzola went 2-for-4, while sophomore shortstop Taylor Johnson accounted for the other Patriot hit, a triple in the second inning.

Wroblewski (6-1) registered her second shutout of the year as she struck out two and walked two.  She stranded the tying run on third base in the last of the seventh.  She also escaped a bases-loaded situation in the fourth frame.  The win snapped Georgia College's 10-game winning streak.

Georgia College righty Brooke Taylor (2-4) took the hard-luck loss as she surrendered only four hits and used an economical 72 pitches to record the complete game.

In Saturday's opener, FMU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Brunson scored on a throwing error.  The margin increased to 4-0 in third after a two-run single by Johnson and a two-out RBI-single by senior center fielder Mikala Barnhart.

Georgia College (16-10, 3-1) rallied to take a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the third as two Patriot errors led to five unearned runs. The Patriots knotted the score at 5-5 on a two-out run-scoring single to left by Brunson in the fifth and FMU regained the lead on senior third baseman's Sam Chiudina's run-scoring double to right in the sixth frame.

The Bobcats however scored twice in the last of the seventh to capture the walk-off victory.  FMU freshman right-hander Sydney Holland (9-5) surrendered a lead-off single and a walk before she was relieved by freshman righty Cristi Pressley.  The next three batters all walked to force in the tying and winning runs. Holland was charged with all seven runs, but only two were earned.

Five Patriots registered two hits – Barzola, Brunson, Barnhart, sophomore catcher Chelsea Welty, and freshman right fielder Rayni Newman – as FMU outhit the Bobcats 13-6, but only one of the Patriots' game-one hits went for extra bases.

Taylor, the third of three Bobcat hurlers in the opener, was the beneficiary of the game-one rally and earned the victory.

Barzola and Welty now lead Francis Marion with nine multi-hit games in the Patriots' 25 contests this season.
