Patriots fall in second half despite record-setting night for Browning

FLORENCE, SC – On a night that Francis Marion University senior guard Detrek Browning established a new career scoring mark, the Patriots were outscored by 17 in the second half as Clayton State University rallied for a 66-59 win, Saturday evening (Jan. 6) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

The 23rd-ranked Patriots (8-3, 3-3) will play host to Lander University on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Please note that Monday's non-conference affair with St. Andrews University has been canceled due to a scheduling conflict.

Browning scored 11 points in the opening half on 4-of-6 shooting to equal Carlton Farr's school-record total of 1,863 set between 1990 and 1995.  The Columbia native and Irmo High School product then broke the record by grabbing a tip-pass from junior Brandon Parker and hitting a step-back three-pointer from the left corner just 1:39 into the second half.

Browning finished with a game-high 19 points to push his total to 1,871.  He registered his total in 96 career games, while Farr appeared in 119 contests. Browning also ranks second on both the Patriot career assists (357) and steals (200) lists. Browning becomes the third player all-time to sit atop the scoring list, joining Allen Floyd (20 years) and Farr (23 years).

Junior forward Victor Hunt came off the FMU bench to tally 11 points and was the only other Patriot to reach double figures.

Junior 6-6 forward Jaylen Taylor led Clayton State (7-3, 5-1) with 17 points, eight rebounds, and five blocked shots, while reserve guard Justin Tuckson scored 15 points, 13 of which came in the final twelve-and-a-half minutes.

The opening half was closely contested until Francis Marion scored the final seven points of the stanza to claim a 35-25 advantage at intermission. The Patriots shot just under 50 percent (14-of-29) from the field over the opening 20 minutes.

The FMU lead expanded to 11 points (40-29) on Browning's record-setting bucket with 18:21 left. With 12:53 on the clock, the Patriot lead was eight at 48-40.  However, Clayton State put together a 16-4 run that included eight points from Tuckson to assume a 56-52 advantage with four minutes remaining.

On two occasions, senior forward Warren Specht got FMU to within one possession of the lead, but a three-pointer by Tuckson with 51 ticks left expanded the margin to 62-56.

Francis Marion finished the game shooting 37.7 percent from the floor, was 9-of-24 from behind the three-point arc, and hit 4-of-6 free throws.  Bolstered by their second-half effort (16-of-30 for 53.3%), the Lakers shot 46.6 percent for the game, including 7-of-14 on three-point attempts, and were 5-of-6 at the foul line.

The game featured the conference's top scoring team (FMU at 86.3 ppg) and the fourth-best scoring unit (Clayton State at 80.0 ppg).
