Patriots complete come-from-behind win to remain unbeaten

MOUNT OLIVE, NC – Francis Marion University senior guard Detrek Browning scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half to push the Patriots to a 91-75 road victory over the University of Mount Olive, Wednesday evening (Dec. 13) in non-conference men's collegiate basketball action.

The Patriots, who received votes in both of the latest NCAA Division II national rankings, remain undefeated on the campaign with a 6-0 mark, while the Trojans fall to 6-3.

Francis Marion will host two Peach Belt Conference games before the holiday break, the first against Georgia Southwestern State University on Sunday with tip-off set for 3:30 p.m., followed by Columbus State University on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Browning, entering the game 11th on the NCAA active career scoring list, shot 10-of-16 from the field, while gathering six rebounds. He now stands at 1,766 career points, only 22 shy of passing Evrik Gary for second place on the Patriot career scoring list.

FMU junior forward Brandon Parker followed with 21 points, while junior Ryan Davis tallied a career-high 20 points and a team-high eight rebounds.  Sophomore guard Jaquez Smith scored eight points and handed out eight assists.

The leading scorer for UMO was senior Tayon Gleaves with 19 points. Sophomore Cameron Robinson recorded 11 points, while junior Dominique Tham also had 11 points and added 12 rebounds.

FMU jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead to open the contest, but the Trojans would make a run to take an 8-7 advantage at the 15:56 mark. Despite three ties in a highly competitive first half, Mount Olive would hold a 50-46 lead at halftime. Parker led all scorers with 15 points as the two teams headed into the locker room, but the Trojans held Browning to only four.

Mount Olive connected on 65.6 percent of its shots in the opening half, but the Patriot defense tightened in the second stanza holding the Trojans to 31.3 shooting.

Trailing 57-54, Francis Marion scored 15 unanswered points – 10 by Browning – to take the lead for good at 69-57 with 12:51 remaining in the game.  Mount Olive trimmed the margin to 75-72 with 8:17 left, but Francis Marion closed the game on a 16-3 run.

Francis Marion finished the game hitting 54.9 percent from the floor, its third straight game over 50 percent.  FMU shot 6-of-15 from three-point range, while the Trojans were 7-of-19. The Patriots hit 7-of-11 free-throws, while UMO went 6-of-11.
