Francis Marion carves up Johnson and Wales 102-71

FLORENCE, SC – Senior guard Detrek Browning scored 23 points to lead five players in double figures as Francis Marion University defeated Johnson and Wales University (NC) 102-71, Thursday night (Nov. 16) in non-conference men's basketball action.

Francis Marion improves to 3-0 this season and 31-17 all-time in home openers, including 12 wins over the past 13 seasons.  The Wildcats suffered their first defeat of the season against two wins.

The Patriots will play host to Shaw University on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Smith University Center.

Browning connected on 8-of-14 field goal attempts and also pulled down seven rebounds. His nightly update on the FMU career charts are as follows: fourth in career points with 1,701, now second in career steals at 189, third in assists with 334, and 22nd in rebounding at 439.

Junior forwards Brandon Parker and Ryan Davis followed Browning with 18 and 16 points respectively, while 6-7 senior center Judah Alexander posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds in addition to three blocked shots.  Junior Victor Hunt chipped in 11 points.  Alexander moved past Dennis Sullen on the Patriot rebounding list for 15th place with 522.

Junior forward Christian Creswell led the Wildcats with 14 points off the bench, while Messiah Baptiste scored 11 and Majerle Poole and James Veal 10 apiece.

A three-pointer by Poole gave Johnson and Wales an early 9-6 advantage, but FMU responded with 15 straight points to take the lead for good at 21-9.  Browning contributed a pair of three-pointers to the run.

The Wildcats pulled to within 25-18 with 9:39 left before halftime, but an 8-0 spurt by the Patriots expanded the margin to 15 (33-18).  FMU led by as many as 22 in the opening stanza before settling for a 54-34 lead at intermission.  The Patriots shot 54.5 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes.

The margin remained above 20 points for the entirety of the second half.  Francis Marion's largest lead of 36 occurred on three occasions: 96-60 after a dunk by junior Kingsley Nwagboso, 98-62 after a jumper by Hunt, and 100-64 after a layup by sophomore point guard Jaquez Smith.

Francis Marion connected on 46.2 percent from the floor, including 8-of-30 three-point attempts, and sizzled at the foul line making 22-of-27 attempts.  The Wildcats shot 40.3 percent from the field, including 11-of-29 from beyond the arc, but hit only 2-of-7 charity tosses.

FMU forced 18 Johnson and Wales turnovers and led 31-5 in points off turnovers and 50-22 in points-in-the-paint.  The Patriots also outrebounded the Wildcats 54-35.
