Patriot cagers sweep PBC weekly awards

Francis Marion University seniors Detrek Browning and Khai Chandler have been named the Peach Belt Conference men's and women's basketball Players of the Week for the opening week of the 2017-18 season.

Browning, a 6-0 guard, averaged 29.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game as the Patriots swept their two games in the Peach Belt Conference/South Atlantic Conference Challenge last weekend in Pembroke, N.C. He shot 53.7 percent from the floor, was 8-of-21 from beyond the three-point arc, and hit 7-of-10 free throws, while playing 78 of 80 total minutes in the two contests.

The Columbia native also scored the game-winning bucket with 2.8 seconds in Friday's 72-70 victory over Catawba College.

Browning upped his career point total to 1,678 and moved into a tie for second on the FMU career steals list with 188, into third position for career assists with 332, and into 22nd for career rebounds with 432. He now stands ninth-best on the PBC scoring list and 10th on the PBC career steals list.

Chandler averaged 23.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.0 steals per game in two FMU wins last weekend at the PBC/Conference Carolinas Challenge. In the two contests, the 5-10 guard shot 38.6 percent from three-point range and 71.4 percent from the foul line, while also averaging 2.0 assists per game.

In the season opener, the Raleigh, N.C., native scored 23 points to become the 27th Patriot to reach 1,000 career points. She added 24 points and five steals in Saturday's win.

The Patriot women will entertain 14th-ranked Wingate University (2-0) on Wednesday (Nov. 15) at 6 p.m. in the Smith University Center, while the Francis Marion men will play their home opener on Thursday (Nov. 16) at 6 p.m. against Johnson and Wales University (2-0).

Browning is a product of Irmo High School, while Chandler graduated from Garner Magnet High School.
