First-half run lifts Eagles past Francis Marion

DAYTONA BEACH, FL – Host Embry-Riddle University rode a decisive 13-2 spurt to end the first half to grab an 86-77 win over Francis Marion University, Saturday night (Nov. 26) in the championship game of the Daytona Mitsubishi/Kia Shootout.

FMU drops to 2-4 and will next play at home against the University of Mount Olive on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.

Junior guard Detrek Browning led the Patriots with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-7 from three-point range.  In the process, he passed Lou Ziebell to move into 14th place on the Patriot career scoring list with 1,169 points.

Junior guard Josh Council registered 14 points and six rebounds and junior post player Judah Alexander 13 points and six rebounds, while senior 6-8 center Kenneth Jackson added 10 points.  Both Browning and Alexander were named to the All-Tournament Team.

FMU did have its second-most accurate night ever, and best in 37 seasons, at the free throw stripe hitting a perfect 13-of-13.

Tournament MVP Dalton Barnes paced ERAU (4-2) with 21 points and six assists.

Neither team led by more than six points over the opening 17 minutes of the game.  FMU held a 27-26 advantage following a fast-break dunk by Jackson with 3:13 left before halftime.  However, the Eagles closed the stanza with their 13-2 run, including a trio of three-points, to lead 39-29 at intermission.

The run continued with two buckets to open the second half that expanded the margin to 43-29. The lead was still 14 (53-39) with 13:43 remaining, but FMU scored eight straight points – two buckets each by Council and Alexander – to trim the deficit to 53-47 with 11:41 left.  Six straight points by the Eagles pushed the margin back to double figures.

The Patriots cut the advantage to 67-60 with 7:26 remaining after a pair of free throws by Alexander.  However, Embry-Riddle responded with a 10-2 run to take a commanding 77-62 lead.  FMU did manage to get within five points at 80-75 after a three-pointer by Jaquez Smith with 42 ticks on the clock, but ERAU hit 6-of-6 free throws to clinch the win.

Francis Marion connected on a season-high 51.8 percent of its field goal attempts, including 6-of-16 from beyond the three-point arc.  Embry-Riddle shot 44.6 percent, was 6-of-22 from long range, and hit 22-of-26 at the foul line.  However, the Eagles converted 24 FMU turnovers into 27 points.
