FMU Baseball drop doubleheader at Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA – Francis Marion University dropped a couple of games to Georgia College 12-3 and 8-5, Saturday afternoon (Mar. 10) in Peach Belt Conference baseball action.

The Patriots fall to 8-14 overall and 3-8 in the conference, while Georgia College improves to 14-6 and 11-1.

The next game for the Patriots will be this Tuesday against Barton College with the first pitch set for 6 p.m. on Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium.

FMU junior left fielder Gage Taylor recorded five hits and four RBIs in the twinbill, while junior catcher/third baseman Alex Griffith, junior shortstop CJ Mackinson, senior first baseman Trey Chapman, and senior catcher William Robbins had two knocks each.

After single runs in the first three innings to start the opening game, the Bobcats would put a three spot on the board in the fifth frame as senior center fielder Logan Mattix doubled down the left field line scoring two runs. Two batters later, junior pinch hitter Brandt Stallings hit a sacrifice fly, making the score 6-1.

The Patriots scored in the second inning with an RBI single by Taylor, sixth with a homer by Griffith, and the ninth with a run-scoring double by junior second baseman Brody Thomasson.

Bobcat junior right fielder Wesley Wommack started a six-run seventh inning with a solo homer to right field. The next batter, Mattix, doubled and would come around to score on two balks. Stallings hit a home run to left field to expand the Bobcats' lead. Later that inning, junior third baseman Garrett Green singled up the middle plating another run. The scoring in the game was capped off by a two-RBI double by Wommack to make the score 12-3.

Junior righty starter Isaac Rodgers falls to 2-3 on the season for FMU as he pitched four innings giving up six runs on 10 hits and striking out two batters.

Starting senior Trevor Gutherie (1-0) picked up his first win of the season for Georgia College allowing two runs on nine hits.

Francis Marion posted a 4-0 lead in the second inning of game number two as Chapman singled through the right side of the infield plating Griffith. Taylor would then blast a three-run homer to right field to expand the lead.

The Bobcats came back with a single run in the bottom of the second, and took a 5-4 lead in the third as Mattix had an RBI-single through the right side scoring two runs, followed by a two-RBI single by senior catcher Brandon Purcell.

FMU tied the game in the top of the fifth on a solo homer by Mackinson, but Georgia College would add three runs in the bottom half of the frame to go up 8-5.

Junior reliever Chandler Amason (1-1) gave up one run and one hit in 1.2 innings pitched to earn the win. Sophomore righty Matt Studdard started the game for the Bobcats as he pitched 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits.

The loss went to junior righty Evan Flynn as he came on in relief of sophomore southpaw Garrett Wilson. Both Wilson and Flynn allowed four runs. Sophomore right-hander Christian Umphlett pitched 3.2 innings to end the game, while fanning four batters.
