Patriots fall to Bobcats in series opener

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA – Georgia College senior first baseman Matthew Miller had three hits and four RBIs as the Bobcats used 14 hits to power their way past Francis Marion University 11-0, Friday evening (Mar. 9) in Peach Belt Conference baseball action.

Francis Marion (8-13, 3-7) and Georgia College (12-6, 9-1) will play a doubleheader tomorrow with the first pitch set for 1 p.m. to wrap up the three-game series.

Senior designated hitter Tee DuBose went 2-for-2 from the plate, while junior shortstop CJ Mackinson, senior catcher William Robbins, and junior left fielder Gage Taylor all gathered one hit in the contest for the Patriots.

FMU loaded the bases in the top of first, but failed to score. In response, the Bobcats got the scoring going early with an RBI-triple in the first frame by junior right fielder Wesley Wommack. The next batter, senior center fielder Logan Mattix knocked a two-run homer to expand the lead to 3-0.

In the second inning, sophomore shortstop Cal Gentry singled through the right side of the infield plating one run, followed by a sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Matthew Miller.

The next two trips to the plate for Miller were productive as he singled in a run and doubled in two runs to make the score 8-0 after six innings.

The Patriots stranded a pair of runners in both the fourth and sixth innings.

Georgia College would add three more runs in the eighth as Mattix had a two-RBI triple and senior catcher Brandon Purcell plated the 11th run for the Bobcats with a single up the middle.

Sophomore righty Sam High (1-1) started the contest for the Patriots, giving up eight runs and striking out three batters.

Senior right-handed pitcher Charlie Hecht (5-0) remains perfect for the Bobcats as he pitched eight innings, allowing just four hits and no runs.
